Overview

What is a fiscal sponsor?

A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit organization that offers their legal and tax-exempt status to projects that align with the sponsor’s mission.

What does a fiscal sponsor provide?

The purpose is to provide projects the ability to focus on the work while the fiscal sponsor provides administrative support. Support may include:

• Acceptance of grants and donations under the 501(c)(3) tax exemption.
• Paying vendors, employees, contractors, and other expenses
• Back-end administration and support (Human resources, fundraising, IT support, access to software or other resources, legal support, etc)
• Negotiating and entering into contracts on behalf of the project

What does it cost?

Typically, a fiscal sponsor will provide these services for a fee, to be negotiated between the project representatives and the sponsor. Code for America provided these services to Brigades without a fee.
