Can we keep using our “Code for ____” name?
We are recommending that Brigades that currently use the “Code for” prefix begin the process of changing their name, perhaps to instead use the “Open” prefix or another prefix. It looks like we would need to require this change by the end of the year.
Why? The conclusion of our current MOU means that the current permission to use Code for America’s name and likeness will also end on June 30, 2023. For Brigades who return a signed Notice of Termination Letter by May 1st, 2023, they will have permission to use the “Code for” name and likeness as part of the Grace Period. However, the permission will end no later than December 31, 2023. It is administratively burdensome and costly for us to continue to provide a license to use the name/likeness beyond the end of the year. We are hopeful that this 10-month-long process will help to ensure that we can support Brigades to gracefully and successfully transition.
This does not affect Brigades who use the “Open” prefix.

What will happen to our Brigade’s money?
If you are moving to a new fiscal sponsor or establishing your own nonprofit, we will transfer your funds to your new organization. If you are dissolving your Brigade, you are welcome to use your remaining funds on food and supplies for your last Meetups or Summit (travel and tickets only). For other expenses, email [email protected] first to confirm if they will be reimbursable.
Please note the cutoff dates for balance transfers, expense reports for reimbursement, and donation acceptance outlined in the Key Dates section.
